Frequently Asked Questions

Question1: The minibar is not getting cold, but heat is coming from the back of the minibar (silver insulation).
Question2: The minibar is not getting cold, no heat is coming from the back of the minibar (silver insulation).
Question3: The minibar not getting cold, heat is coming from the back of the minibar (silver insulation).

IMPORTANT

Prior to performing any test several ground rules must be assumed:
1 - The minibar must be level in all directions.
2 - Use a receptacle that has no light switch operating it or test (with a voltmeter) to make certain that 115V is reaching the receptacle.
3 - If the unit is installed in a cabinet, make sure that the back of the minibar is vented to allow the heat to dissipate.
4 - If a strong ammonia odor exist, the cooling unit must be changed.

Note: Unplug the minibar 1 to 2 hour prior to servicing to avoid burns, the cooling unit is very hot especially if the cooling unit is defective or if an overheating condition exists.

Question 1
(the pencil heater is working & the minibar is not getting cold)
ALWAYS UPLUG THE MINIBAR BEFORE WORKING IN THE JUNCTION BOX

1.1 If there is plenty of heat coming from the back of the minibar, but the unit will not get cold at all, the cooling unit is defective and must be replaced.

Question 2
(pencil heater is not getting hot)
Note: This will always indicate an electrical problem
ALWAYS UPLUG THE MINIBAR BEFORE WORKING IN THE JUNCTION BOX

2.1 Make certain that the minibar is being supplied with electricity. Make certain that the receptacle is not controlled by a light switch.

2.2 Open the junction box and test the resistance of the heater with an ohmmeter (for a 75W heater/50L fridge it should read 165 to 185 ohms) (for a 65W heater/30L fridge it should read 195 to 215 ohms). Follow the two wires exiting the bottom of the aluminum insulation and test the heater directly inside the junction box.

2.3 Check that the thermostat sensor wire is not broken or kinked.

2.4 If no defect is found thus far, the thermostat may have shorted and must be replaced.

Question 3
(The minibar is not getting cold)
ALWAYS UPLUG THE MINIBAR BEFORE WORKING IN THE JUNCTION BOX

3.1 Check that the minibar is level in all directions.

3.2 Make certain that the unit is being supplied with the required voltage (220v/115v/12v).

3.3 If the unit is installed into a cabinet, make certain that the back of the minibar is vented to allow for proper air circulation.

3.4 Most units are equipped with an auto defrost. If the minibar temperature is checked during the defrost cycle it may appear as if the unit has ceased to operate (always double check several hours later prior to contacting the manufacturer about a potential defect).

3.5 Check that the thermostat sensor wire is not kinked or damaged in any way.

3.6 If a strong ammonia odor exist, visually inspect the cooling unit for a yellow stain (especially in the welded joints). The cooling unit must be changed.

3.7 Check that the door is properly closing and is fully sealed once closed.
